Sacha Baron Cohen to Play Queen Frontman Freddie Mercury?! Yagshamesh!

Sacha Baron Cohen to play Queen Frontman Freddie Mercury

Sacha Baron Cohen has identified himself as a solid character actor. Whether playing up the ingenious ignorance of Borat or the waspish sophistication of Signor Adolfo Pirelli, Cohen knows how to dive deep into the psyche of his characters and play up their vulnerabilities as determined as their confidence.

So when an announcement leaked merely hours ago declaring that Cohen has closed a deal to play Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, we got a little excited.

Really, it is uncanny how much Sacha Baron Cohen resembles Freddy. It’s gotta be the mustache.

The film is currently being scripted by Peter Morgan, whose other films include biopics such as Frost/Nixon, The Queen, and most recently The Special Relationship. This film is to be focused on the band’s first year, getting together, writing songs, touring, all leading up to Queen’s appearance at Live Aid in 1985. That performance is still rendered as one of the greatest live concerts of all time.

How do the remaining members of Queen feel about this? In the past, they have been reluctant to lend any of their music to the movie studios (sans Wayne’s World). However, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, have licensed songs and music publishing rights for the movie, and they even formed Queen Films to be part of the production team on the film.

While it is still unclear whether or not Cohen will be singing or Freddie’s original chords will reign. It is very clear that we’re gonna be able to rock out to Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions, Another One Bites The Dust, Fat Bottomed Girls, You’re My Best Friend… the list goes on!

As long as we don’t see Freddie lounging on the beach in Borat’s uber-thong, we are ready. Bring it on, Hollywood!
