Song of the Day : I Believe In A Thing Called Love – The Darkness
Back in the late-70’s and early-80’s, glam rock and punk rock erupted from the music horizon. Stage antics and anarchy were remnants of the counter-culture movement of the 60’s; fans and musicians alike were rediscovering the power of plugging in rather than tuning out. Spit takes, fashion faux pas, and rebellion commandeered the radio waves – and something happened. People took off their disco platforms and began following these new pioneers of rock. The world was changing and music was at the forefront of its metamorphosis.
While the years have slowly trickled away and the glam-era is a thing of the past, some of the leaders of that decade are giving us a first-rate view of what it was like being kings of the controversial glitz during an important part of musical history.
Famed Rock-n-rollers David Bowie and Billy Idol are set to release books based upon their lives in the upcoming year. Bowie’s bio, titled Object follows the artist through the years, mixing the best parts of a photo montage with short quips voiced by Bowie himself. According the his website, the book is a “typically obtuse offering from the singer.” As opposed to the “normal” memoirs one could expect from such a star, Bowie instead collected 100 artifacts from his life and spotlights their influence and insight. Dramatic? Maybe. Controversal? Could be. Personal? Most definitely.
On the other hand, Idol’s book, an autobiography titled Dancing With Myself, will follow Idol through his years with Generation X, his solo outbreak, and (according to him) “the drugs, the booze, the women, the 24-hour around-the-clock excess”. In a more traditional escapade, the singer goes into detail about his rise to fame and his battle with stardom. The man knew if he were to survive, he had to continue creating music he was proud of and the people could relate to.
Idol delivers, inspiring statements like, “Life gave me a golden key when I fell in love with rock ‘n’ roll music. It was the key to the answer of how to live and achieve your dreams.”
